Captain John Peterlin, The Port of Galveston Captain John Peterlin joined the Port of Galveston at the end of 2000, serving as senior director of marketing and administration since 2002. He has been involved with the Board of Directors of the GHPB for many years and, more recently, as a member of the Executive Committee since 2009.

In his current position at the Port, he is responsible for their functions and activities relating to marketing and advertising, negotiation of leases, berthing and operating agreements with port tenants and customers, trade and business development, customer relations, the port’s tariff, governmental affairs and grant activities, the port’s U.S. Foreign-Trade Zone No. 36 and the Port’s administration department and its functions.

John is a 1976 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, where he received a bachelor of science degree in marine transportation with a minor in law, a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a U.S. Coast Guard license as a third mate, unlimited tonnage on any ocean He is bilingual, with Spanish as a second language.

Following graduation, he sailed as a licensed deck officer world wide in the U.S. flag merchant marine on MM&P contracted commercial and oceanographic ships, in billets from third mate up to and including master for more than fourteen years, including serving eight years in the capacity of ship’s master. He has held a U.S. Coast Guard license as a master mariner since 1982, the first member of his graduating class at Kings Point to obtain an unlimited ocean masters license.

Houston Pilots When he came ashore, John joined the Coastal Corporation Coscol Marine in 1990, where he was involved with the ocean transportation of petroleum products as the port captain and later as director of operations. After leaving “Coscol,” he started his own company in late 1993, which was involved in marine cargo survey, logistics, and ocean cargo and consulting. In early 1998, he became CEO of roll-on/roll-off ship operating company, Gulf Bridge Ro-Ro L.L.C, which provided a Ro/Ro cargo service between Mobile, AL and Tuxpan, Mexico. John completed his military service in 2001 as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

John is a past member of the Greater Houston Partnership, a member of the Council of American Master Mariners, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Propeller Club of the United States, the Houston Maritime Association, Rotary International.

Vopak John has also been a member of the Houston -Galveston Navigation Safety Advisory Committee (HOGANSAC) over several appointed terms since 1992 and currently represents the Port of Galveston on the Committee.

John participated in the completion of the replica 1812 Baltimore Clipper ship PRIDE OF BALTIMORE and is a crewmember on the ELISSA, where he is often apt to be found aloft and on the yards. His interests include music, photography and recently golf.

John is a Colorado native and he and his wife, Julia, have lived in the Houston Metro area for the last twenty years and currently reside with their many dogs and cats in Galveston County.
