Clyde Fitzgerald started working on the Port of Houston's docks in 1959, long before giant cranes were used to lift cargo-laden containers out of ships.
"Back then everything we did was brute strength picking up and pulling," said Fitzgerald, now the president of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast district of the International Longshoremen's Association. "All we did was pick up heavy boxes and sacks all day long."
